The first SCCA Solo National Tour event of 1999 was held on Feb 27-28th in Meridian, MS.
Except for the weather ('only' 60 degrees & rained early and late on Sat) it was one of the best Tour events ever. 247'ish entries, great courses, food, band and raffle (they gave away Peavey electric guitars to the 2 entrants that had the longest commute). Not to mention the Hot Wheels competition (sorry, not pics of that). Results are posted.
Bruce Domeck's Ralt won the fairly large BM class
Eric Pettigrew's Ralt. Yes, we were at an airport.
The surface was glass smooth except for the finish's
which had the mod cars getting airborn.
A 1st gen Mazda Rx7 with a small block Chevy
vs a Spridget with a rotary in EM. Go figure.
Mark Sipe's new AS wheels still need some development time (and stiffer shocks?).
Notice the Pro Solo graphics package
Eric Vandermey driving Rick Scalzo's DS Neon.
It seemed that everyone from Chicago had the cone cloud hanging over them.
Mark Chiles took 2nd in DS behind Nick Leverone
This car was beautiful but looked like a handful to drive
ESL winner Jean Kinser kicks up a popular cone (last one in the slalom)
The yellow EM Mazda from Texas
One of the many yellow BMW's
Roger Johnson's yellow SS Corvette
(do you see a color trend developing?)
The 'formerly yellow' AP TVR is still for sale
John Thomas took a big Sat lead thanks in part to some timely rain showers.
He drove a bone stock Cougar from event sponsors Lincoln/Mercury to 2nd in GS.
Joe Goeke hopped in Dan Ledford's DSM and won GS with a great Sun final run.
The Sunday corner workers hated this quick right/left section, as did the competitors.
Many drivers went in too hot (notice the skid marks) and hit the wall of cones on the far side of the left hander.
Denise Fobair won HSL in the Inacom Celica
This is about as miserable as it gets.
Denise, Sat 1st heat, rain, cold tires, and braking on slippery paint.
Notice the 'death grip' on the wheel.
"We drove 14 hours for this?"
Sunday was much better and she leaned on it a little more.
"OK, let's drive 26 hours to Ft Myers next weekend!"
