Pic's from the Wisconsin Autosports Group Ice Solo on 1/19/03.
Lake Sinnissippi in Hustisford, WI. They plow a 3 car wide 3/4 mile
length course in the snow and use hand held stop watches to time the cars.
They do put out a few cones but they only need 'course workers' when cars
get stuck. Classes are FWD, RWD, & AWD and then broken down by wheel
diameter. Click here for more info.

An old standby awaits the practice runs

There's a group of about 5 VW bugs on studded tires, they really move.

More VW action, there were also two VW vans in the paddock.

I don't think the wing helped.

Hmm, why does Tim have a tow strap in his hands?

I think this job will call for something a little more substantial

Before practice runs the driver went out on the lake and drove over a thin spot, (he wasn't on course).

The driver had a cold swim but was apparently unhurt

"Here they come to save the day!"

When this didn't work they drove some spikes into the ice and used a winch to get the car out. Not sure if water got in the engine or if the turbo's balked at being quenched in freezing water. I'm told these events are typically not covered by insurance. You drive on the ice and you take your chances.

This guy apparently didn't let off the gas at the finish. I believe he blew a tire when his car hit the trees. There were some strange things happening today. Most of the time it's just a blast.
